Conversations That Count: Raising Kids - A Marathon Not a Sprint

Alison is one of the leading figures in British journalism having served as Editor in Chief at the Mirror for six years until last year. During her tenure the Mirror was Daily Newspaper of the Year and news organisation of the year in 2022 and earned a reputation for breaking major political stories including the Partygate scandal.

Alison has worked for many years at the top of her industry whilst raising three children. This fireside chat is themed around the broad topic of juggling careers and family over the long term – Raising Kids: A Marathon Not a Sprint.

Much has been written about returning to work after having a baby or support for parents with young children but perhaps less is discussed around juggling work with the challenges of raising school-aged children, teenagers and young adults —managing school schedules, demanding extracurricular activities, academic pressures, uni preparation, mental health concerns, and navigating a digital world.

This event isn’t only for those with older children, it’s for all working parents, a chance to look ahead – if the average age of children leaving home in the UK is 24yrs, this chat will centre around parenting over the long term.

Focused on sharing personal anecdotes and insights from one of the leading figures in British journalism within the context of an informal conversation. The discussion will be facilitated by Rachel Bower, Head of Brand and Reputation at MHP Group: herself now a mum of older children, having raised her teen/adult daughters during her 25+ years in the agency world.  We’ll talk to Alison about some of the issues and topics we wish had been discussed when our children were younger and hear about life on the front line of British journalism.
